It is time to one Titans duel.
This May sound unfair, but they are the Kings of its own time. The tested SL45 originally had FW06, and now it has been upgraded to SL45i FW56, the lastes avaiable.
Lets see how each one goe on different aspects...
SL45
I allways heard from many Siemens fans, indeed also I quoted the SL45 has de King amoung the phones.
But when I went to the post office to see this jewl...
At glance...
The Design and Build quality
When I opened that white box to the this... I could never imagine! Sleek, sexy, light, I can't describe it!
How one old phone, released on 2001 have one body touch so soft? I can't stop touching it, Is like touching one girl soft and sweet skin...
It is simply beautifull, If you guys see it in real, you allways want to have one...
Having one SL45 is the pure passion!
SL45 is really one nice artefact of beauty!
I still fascinated. Well, enough about the design, you guys must be understood!
For one old phone, it look solid! Compare it with one MC60 and you will undestand what I say. :wink:
Indeed, you also can forgott the antenna, it stay so well on the shape!
Display
SL45 have one 101 x 80 monochromatic display, iluminated with ambar color. Indeed, the light is ligther than the one on ME45, and the SL45 display gain at SX1 display under day light conditions with the sun insiding on the display.
You can costumise it with graphics, the only shame is that it don't support "full screen" wallpapers.
Does it really matter?
Now I will tell you one thing that got my 5 stars and drove me perplexed:
You can adjust the Display illumination, not only the contrast!
It is good to keep the illumination at minimum, or deactivated, since it will save battery.
Keypad
The SL45 keypad is really fast and confortable. One of the best ones I have tried.
Even only with one thumb, you can press the hole keypad really fast.
The space between them is good, and make easy to press.
The 4 way navipad is perfect.
The only keys with less positive aspect, are the + and -, with require one press a little hard.
The + and - keys control the volume, or help to navigate under the menus.
There is the "o" key, it enable the recorder if long press, or the dictator if softpressed.
The ">" key, enable the MP3 player.
Of course, you can program fast acess to your favourite app.
The left softkey is programable, like the keys 2 - 9. The key 1 is only for voicemail.
You can acess this functions for shortcut:
-> new sms
-> calendar
-> IrDA
-> Calculator
-> Currency convertor
-> Games
-> Voice Dialing
-> User group
-> Sim services
-> Dictaction machine
-> meetings
-> Mp3 player
-> Card-Explorer
-> Profiles
-> Lost Calls
-> Received Calls
-> Java
-> phone mumber
-> Sim memory (sim phonebook)
-> hide ID
-> Internet
So, 21 features! Quite impressive for one old man!
MMC
The first phone ever supporting one MMC. The FW56 support up to 1Gb, indeed, also support High-Speed MMC's
On older FW, I couldn't have my 256Mb MMC working, but on 56, it go like a charm!
To pull out the MMC from the phone, you have one little button that have to be pressed with one pen.
The slot itself is small, and the guys whoi say it (my job partners) asked it that was for SIM card!
When I toke this out, and told the Age of the phone, they got perplexed!
Adress Book
Good adress book, up to 500 contacts on it.
The possible fields are:
-> Last name and first name
-> Email
-> Company name
-> Store 4 phone mumbers
-> Adress (complete with street, post code, city, country)
-> Internet URL
-> "Vip" contact
So, the current user will be way satisfied with the SL45's adress book.
Messaging
T9 input made it easy. You can store your SMS on MMC, that means hundreds of them!
No EMS support, but you have one image messaging menu. And this is the only 45 phone with 35 phones message images avaiable from menus, without using codes to enable them.
The leght of each SMS, is 160 Characters.
Business tools
SL45i offer one calendar witn month, week, or, day view.
You can set memos for meetings, birthdays, etc will alarm
Indeed, there is also one Appointmens section. Since SL45 don't have any daily allarm, you can use this to have your daily alarms, since you can program one appointment, to ring every day at one defined hour.
So... It have alarm, but for one different way!
It snooze with the phone on, or off.
The dictacting machine is way so usefull! Depending from the maximum space avaiable at MMC, you can record up to 5h!
Voice control is also avaiable, like voicedialling, or voicecommands.
On voice commands you only can set to MP3, or dictaction machine.
Not woth, since you can access that functions with the side keys.
Calculator, WAP browser, currency converter and the ansering machine are avaiable.
With that answering machine, you can record one note, and then, when the phone ring, you press the "o" side key softly, and then, the "green" button to receive the call.
It don't have one simple notepad, or even email client.
But since the King is special... You can find JAVA notepads, or Email clients for it.
JAVA and MP3
Why I decided to make one section for Java?
That is simple, since SL45i was the first phone ever to have Java on the market.
It is Midp 1.0, the missing features of your SL45 can be added with Java programs, like E-mail Clients, notepad, etc.
I'll not talk about games, but my favourite of all time is the GP Pinball, quite good and adictive if you like Pinball Games.
You can find good tools to improve your SL45i on [Midlet.org SL45i Section] so, you only want to know what you need.
MP3, the fun start here! The sound is good, you can create playlists, and adjust the pitch, or bass.
The best friend on trips, but remember, listening MP3 is very power needed...
By this features, at the launching year of SL45i, We can surelly say that this is the father of modern SmartPhones.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SX1
SX1, another mark from Siemens, another king, loved by many, and hated by others, but still one of the best SmartPhones ever, with Radio, MP3, and hot-swapable MMC, since none of the competitors at his time had it.
His futuristic design amazed me for the first time, and still amazing me.

Conclusion
You choose the winner, the important is that they still Kings.
SL45i is better on some aspects, and SX1 on others...
This review is intended to let you know how tecnologie advanced from the years of SL45i and SX1...
Even with his monochrome screen, SL45i is better than many colour phones, and SX1 even not being 3G phone, can beat them.
